hey! its me again.
this is the criteria for ur project.

Critique of an Economics Articles Project

Instructions
1. Working in groups of 4 (or 3) H2 students,
· Select 2 articles from the newspapers, weekly periodicals (like The Economist, Newsweek, Times) or the internet news providers.
The articles
a) should not be dated earlier than 1 Jan 2007.
b) should be about a microeconomic problem and measures to solve it.
c) need not necessarily be about Singapore.

If there is only 1 H1 student in the class, then he/she can choose to work with H1 students from other classes. If not the H1 student is allowed to work alone and he/she is required to critique only 1 article.

· Write a critique on each of the 2 articles where you
o Identify the economic issue(s) featured in the article
o Apply relevant economic concepts / theories to explain and analyze the view(s) articulated in the article
o Evaluate the view(s) that were made in the article i.e. make a reasoned judgment about the writer’s analysis and assessment of the issue(s)

2. Each critique is to be type written and should be about 2 A4 pages in length (double line spacing, 1 inch margin all round). This will include any relevant diagrams that aid the analysis.

Your portfolio of 2 critiques should be arranged in the following sequence –
a) Cover page – which includes your Statutory Names, CT group, title, date and source of your 2 articles
b) Each article followed by the critique

3. The deadline for submission is Fri, 12 noon, 15 Aug 2008. Late submissions will not be graded.

4. There will be a Question and Answer session on your critiques during one of your tutorials in term 3 week 10. Your tutor will confirm with you the date, nearer to the Q and A session.

A guide for students - Questions to ask yourself when reading an article about economic issues
1. What particular economic problem and/or policy recommendation(s) is/are being considered in the article?
2. What assumptions, if any, did the writer make implicitly in his analysis? Are these assumptions valid?
3. Are there any limitations in the data that was used to support the analysis and conclusions made by the writer? [As the data sufficient? Is the data reliable? – consider the source of the data that was used by the writer; consider whether the data that was presented in the article really measure what it is suppose to measure. Is the data used in the article from a reputable source?]
4. Is the writer’s explanation or argument economically sound? I.e. can it be supported by economic analysis?
5. Has the writer analyzed the issue from various angles e.g. from the view points of different interest groups (consumers vs. businesses, employers vs. employees, residents vs. foreigners, private sector vs. public sector, internal vs external, short-term vs long term). Is there any biasness in the writer’s views?
